I sent out my first job application today, to Dublin based Digit Gaming. But first, lets back track a little bit.
Recently - I'd say a week and a half ago - I saw an advert for a career in gaming. intrigued but not fully convinced I checked it out to discover that digit gaming were in fact looking for a game audio engineer! unfortunately my portfolio progression wasn't where I wanted it to be, mainly due to extra work days. Now with something definite to aim for, I felt motivated to complete more pieces that highlight some of my talents before sending in an application. Flash forward to today. it Now it looks as though the position has already been filled as its no longer listed on their website... ...Even though I missed the opening I still decided to fill in a speculative application just in case any other positions become available or the recent hiring falls through. Here's Hoping! Overall its been a mixed bag of emotions but I guess its true what they say... 'Timing is everything'! Although I do believe that if it doesn't work out, it wasn't meant to be! ~ Big Man Murph Just a quick update! We're another step closer to finishing Rosa Nutty's 'Bunny' EP. All that's left to record now is the Trumpet in 'Fine Print' and I can begin the final mixing of it! ...Which will hopefully be finished before the end of May. In terms of the job hunt, I haven't applied anywhere yet! my portfolio is still lacking. But, I did finally brave making the fabled Big Man Murph 'I'll Fight Ya' business cards... Although they started out as a joke, they're bound to peak people's attention... Take a look! My sound design and composition projects are all under way - I'll discuss the progress in more depth when I've more to show.
Portfolio - I've began work on a few demo reels, I'm planning on dividing the reels up into categories and styles to make it easy on someone looking for a certain kind of composition. That's my quick little update, Until next time! ~ Big Man Murph A wise man once said...
'you'll always have work, if you work for free' How very true that is. I was disappointed to find out today that Mythros (The Minecraft Project from a previous post) were just 'pulling my leg' giving me all the details, what they want, what they need, when they need it. heres all the information... Thats Great, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Any Questions fire away! ...communication suddenly stops completely. a few days pass and i Tried emailing instead, still nothing. today nearing a week later i messaged again saying 'Hey, whats the story, you never answered my last few messages - are my services still needed? ...or?' 'Hey sorry! don't know how i missed all your messages... yeah we gave someone else the work. good luck with your future projects.' Well that's annoying... So I posted another classified ad on reddit. And within 5 - 6 hours. I've got 5 different people looking for me to do work for them! A sci-fi multiplayer Brawler, A hotline miami inspired FPS, A 2d Ninja Platformer, A Brothers Grimm styled hack and slash and an aviation simulator! Heres hoping something becomes of all those requests! :D I'm only looking for something to bulk up the portfolio but I'd much rather someone get some audio in the process! I'd like to end with some additional wise words... What The Wise Man forgot to say is that even if do a job for free, you won't be appreciated... ~ Big Man Murph Although I'm yet to send out any cv's, (I want to have a stronger portfolio first!) I've posted a few posts on various reddit subs looking for some work audio wise! ...I've only gotten the one reply so far, but it seems a promising one!
I've been asked to make some 'example sounds' for a minecraft mod called mythros. 'Mythros brings an entire new mine craft experience with expansive worlds, complex storylines, to in depth levelling mechanics, Party systems, revolutionised combat and a complete UI overhaul.' Its a small step but its pretty exciting! If they like the samples that i give them - i'll be making ambient soundscapes, organic sounds, environment sound, combat sounds, user interaction - just about everything besides the music for the mod. ...Which is a pretty big deal for me! Until Next Time, ~ Big Man Murph |
